HURRAH FOR PUPPY CLASSES !
Colette Kase has been training puppies and helping dog owners with pet behaviour problems for over 10 years. Pet Sense is pleased to announce that she will be running puppy classes for those puppy owners who understand the importance of early training and socialisation.
This will be no ordinary puppy class. Put aside visions of puppies running wild or a mean instructor making you yank your puppy around with a choke chain. Pet Sense will provide an enjoyable and safe environment for you and your puppy to learn in.

To find out if this puppy class offers what you are looking for, please answer the following questions:

1. Do you want a puppy who is calm enough to take with you anywhere?
2. Do you want a puppy who will come back when you call and stay when you ask?
3. Do you want a puppy who gets on well with other dogs but thinks you are more fun?
4. Do you want a puppy who is well mannered and friendly?
5. Do you want advice and guidance to help you through the more challenging times with your puppy?
6. Do you want to be assured that you are getting the best advice from qualified, experienced, knowledgeable and helpful instructors who work closely with reputable veterinary practices?
7. Do you want to participate in a class that is relaxing and fun?
8. Do you want ongoing telephone support when you need it?

If your answer to these questions is YES, then you should find the Pet Sense puppy classes perfect for you and your new puppy.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

How old does my puppy have to be to participate?

Puppies can start the Pet Sense puppy class after their first vaccination. Most puppies will be able to start at about 8 weeks of age. We will not accept puppies that are older than 14 weeks of age except in certain circumstances. We will require evidence of vaccination and worming when you register.

Isn't that a bit young?

While your puppy is awake, your puppy is learning. Puppies will learn many things (good and bad) very quickly. It is better to invest your time and energy early so that you will have more fun and fewer problems later. Don't forget that the most important stage of puppy social development happens before most puppies are 14 weeks. Puppies that are not properly socialised can grow into dogs with fear and aggression problems.

How long is a puppy course?

Between the ages of 8 and 20 weeks, you and your puppy may attend as many classes as you wish. Pet Sense advises that you attend as often as you can to achieve maximum benefit.

What will we learn at the puppy class?

Our years of experience have shown us that pet owners want reliable, friendly and obedient dogs. Pet Sense will be focusing on this. Topics covered will include: 1) handling, nipping and biting 2) walking on the lead 3) coming when called 4) encouraging calm and relaxed behaviour 5) appropriate behaviour with people and dogs 6) come, sit, lie down and stay.

Many other topics will be covered and puppy owners will have the chance to ask questions.

Does this mean that my puppy will be trained when I finish?

We wish it was this easy. There is no way your puppy can be trained in one hourly session weekly. Pet Sense puppy class will help you learn to train your puppy. As a rule, your puppy will need about one hour of training every day. For example, six 10-minute training sessions daily would be ideal.

Shouldn't I wait and see if we have problems?

Training new behaviours is much easier than un-training bad habits. If your puppy does develop problems later on, you may have to live with these for the rest of your dog's life. If your dog develops any anti social behaviours, many dog-training classes will refuse to allow you to join.

What other services does Pet Sense offer?

In addition to puppy classes, Pet Sense offer private, one on one puppy and dog training, behavioural counselling for problem pets and pre purchase advice for people considering getting a dog.

Is it better for my puppy to attend classes or to do one on one training?

This is a matter of personal preference. Many puppy owners like to do both. While good puppy classes offer a stimulating but controlled training environment, one on one training can help you tackle training issues within the home environment and in your local park.

Do you work to a code of practice?

Thank you for asking. That is such an important question. Colette Kase is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT membership number 00197). If you would like to read the APDT Code of Practice or find out more about the Association you can look at their website www.apdtuk.f9.co.uk.
