The answer is 11.

dog gets into chair and the master and guest both comment on the self satisfied look on dogs face....

ok, I'm just going to go with what i said in t'other thread...since we are humans and can only think in human terms...I will say yes, a dog is capable of "looking" smug. Whether they are smug is another question that probably can't be answered.  These are quite difficult , perhaps impossible questions and situations doncha think?

You need to model yourself on the White Queen in 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' Nick: "Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."  ;D
To err is human: to forgive, canine.
There is no trust that has never yet been broken, except that of a truly faithful dog.

hehe :)

I think dogs can definately look smug, cross, guilty ... and all the other emotional labels we give them ... i dont think it makes alot of difference what we say they "look like" personally as long as you remember that clearly they aint - they're dogs, not people !!!

hmmm i wonder if dogs have pre-cognition ... i wonder if anyone has done the testing ... probably not these days but I bet Burrhaus and Ivan would have ;)

ya, I can't wait until some bullsh#t scientist with a big research grant  tries to convince everyone that they've decoded, translated barks, whimpers, yelps and all those other endearing noises are pups make.

Nick - look at the work of Turid Rugaas she has done alot on wild wolf pack communication

also Gardner & Gardner, Terrace etc... and their work on primates (because they did have huge research grants).  I know its not dogs but I have done a paper on the primate studies :)
