The treat scale...
« on: July 29, 2008, 10:56:04 AM »
Bev was talking about using "low excitement" treats first (e.g. cubes of cheese) to start the training...

Is there a scale of treats? What is next "higher value" after cheese?

e.g. Something like this maybe? I've decided to call it the "Treat Scale in C#dim7" :)
Feel free to fill in the blanks!

Treat level 1 - Little cubes of cheese
Treat level 2 - ??
Treat level 3 - ??
Treat level 4 - ??
Treat level 5 - ??
Treat level 6 - ??
Treat level 7 - ??
Treat level 8 - Raw fillet steak or something!?!? :)

erm.. cooked chicken maybe?
depends on your dog too I guess.... my mum's lab would do anything for a bit of carrot... Fritz would soon get fed up of that....

It is the dog that decides the value of the treats.

A good way of determining it is to have two different ones in two hands/bowls and monitor which he goes to first.

However if you have a chow hound this can be tricky!

Being a black lab, and in true black lab style, if it looks like food, Izzy will eat it... I'm still trying to teach her that cat poo is definitely NOT on the scale of "nice treats" :)

Oh for goodness sake... she's just farted again... Time to open the windows!

now this is very naughty, and you didnt read this but Gracies all time will do anything for treats is bits of prawn cracker coz she doesnt get them often  :)

drived liver she gets it too often so that for us is on the scale with cheese, but sausage is higher value have been known to dry out left over meat and stuff

but rawer liver and liver cake are higher value

naturesharvest do a treat dry and good to chop up

think Bev used raw mutton as all time top treat for hers

black pudding good but crumbly  :P

yep she'll decide whats bestest, boiled chicken is usually a pretty good mid range treat, beau will do anything for cheese, so thats a higher one for him than chicken.

and bless we wnet through the cat litter thing with beau, now its only on rare occassions when he suddenly decides i'm starving him  ::) i hear a little rustle tell him to leave and he sulks back looking offended & starved  ::)

prawn cracker, sausage, black pudding... Three things I like far too much, and Ben (much like Joey)doesn't share food!! hehe :P

Seriously though, I will look into all of these treats - maybe not the prawn crackers...

Hiya, definately look into the threads on oven drying liver yourself if she really likes it, can be expensive whereas its Toby's fave fave thing in the world and 55p gets a weeks worth of good training out of him!

I think Bev once said one of hers, maybe the puppy Cubert, will do anything for a garden pea!  Just depends on the dog!

Tobys best thing in the entire world is watching Alex make the sandwiches incase he drops a little sliver of butter that a little terrier could just lick lick off the tiles to help with the cleaning!  Can't be good for him... ;D
