Yes you're right, blue merle is a funny one.  It's the colour out of the three that is critical.  Blue Fizz was born in 1981 and things have changed now.

The edges of black will not look as definite as the coat grows in length.

I did a little more digging around and yep, times have changed, a lot of the older merles were darker, it seem to be more fitting to be a lighter merle nowadays.

Oh well, he may of done well 20 years ago

A lot of shelties do well at agility and they are coming on nicely in HTM  and obedience so the world's your oyster

really gorgeous young lad!  Around here Shelties are absolute stars at agility and obedience, if you wanted to I'd bet you could do very well in both.
