Bev - whislte for a greyhound

I was just wondering what whistle you would use for a greyhound and a greyhound/saluki. My friend is wanting to get them trained to the whistle and i didn't know if she could use mine (i think it a 2 11 or it could be a 2 11 1/2) any advise?

she got Bobby (an ex-racer) about 5 years ago and she doesn't let him off at all. She doesn't trust him and just thinks he'll run home (he did that once when he was attacked) anyway because she was having little progress with his recall training she jumped into another dog (the G/S) without really thinking about what training he would need (loose running dog - probably gypsys) she now wont let either off them off and would like to try a different approach at the recall training with using the whistle.

if she hasnt used your whistle before to train it i think that it would be ok to use (thats what bev means when she says unless there has been extinction to date).  remember she needs to start at C1 and use good treats and charge clicker first

no way...no way can this dog be recall trqined on whistle without going back to C1 and even then.....

yep i told her about the c1 ect. will lend her my whistle and print off the whistle topic to give to her.

Bobby is perfectly trained the only probelm she has is that she is nervous of letting him off because of him being an ex racer + of when he was attacked and ran home. More of her problem then Bobby's. She's always wanted another dog and had been looking for the perfect one for some time but when Jake came along - skin and bones with a sob story attached i think she jumped in without really thinking out it. She's never tried Jake off lead cos she wants to get the whistle training in with both of them first.

no way...no way can this dog be recall trqined on whistle without going back to C1 and even then.....

yep she local. She bought a long line and did some recal training like that and he was no bother - was just following her round. He's such a placid thing and didn't care if a rabbit is a few meters away it's more of her not wanting to let him off then a fact that he does ran away

her confidence could be boosted by letting him off somewhere confined.  indoor riding schools are good for this once she's got up the criteria - i remember you saying local area is slim pickings for dog clubs, are there any local riding schools perhaps you could ask for 20mins or something at the end of the day or early morning when they dont use it and say you'll pick up etc...

her family don't drive so she is a bit confined as to where she can go. At the minuet she does off lead recall at a park nearby although it's tiny. Bobby is coming up 8 and doesn't really shift from her side even when he's on the extendi lead so i think she's more focused on getting Jake's recall because he is such a young dog.

once you're ready you could do a restrained recall if you can go out with her to the park ?

The type of whistle is irrelevant, it could be a gundog whistle 210, 210.5, 211, 211.5, a sheepdogs whistle, a referees whistle.

It is the TRAINING that is important.

thanks sweetypye that's what i needed to know, have printed off all the topics about how to train to the whistle just needed to know if it mattered what type of whistle

mmm to some extent i agree...but...i have exp of some dogs responding to a certain tone for a certain behaviour that didnt happen within other tones...and yep the training sure is but...ok..errmm example

in another thread i have posted re cuberts recall..he was 'over' socialised with kids cos i got neurotic re clumbers and kiddies and girl clumbers dont do kids and i want to work him with kiddies that have aspergers and such...so he goes real early (see his thread) to creches and nursery school etc..the upside ....he loves kids...they big big fun factor...the downside is every kiddy is a potential fun parlour...now i can ..and been able to since he 20 weeks ... call him off dogs, adults, food, rabbits, birds etc with my standard 3 blast 2 10 1/2 whistle recall..also my pack call ....for all in right now...also stop and drop stop and recall......unless it involved a kiddy...then pear shape....but...having changed to a 2 11 whistle for a recall off child...i now have it 2 out of 3....if i use a blaster then 100%...pain in the butt..as i really dont want 4 whistles around my neck...

As there are not as many greyhounds that respond to a whistle as retrievers, spaniels and of course BC it will still be a case of suck it and see. And within the breed there are individual idiosyncrasies too, so I think stating that "a 210.5 is THE type to use with an X" is rather disingenous?
