Personally my definition of narrow minded would be to refuse to accept any point of view but you're own - a bit like the people who only registered here to pile into a dispute that didn't concern them & didn't even have the good manners to introduce themselves to us. That's what i call narrow minded.

If i saw a thread on another forum like this about Rottweilers i wouldn't go to all the bother of registering there just to argue the toss with narrow minded people, which is why i am so surprised certain people seem to have done exactly that here, you'd think they had better things to do than waste thier time on narrow minded people like us really.

I am passionate about the breed and I am keen to discuss the ins and outs of the breed itself with dog friendly people. Foxhounds are a rare breed for pets in Australia and from my understanding in the UK as well. So I thought that it would be nice to have someone who owns this breed as a pet to discuss their experiences as it seems that generally most people have only have a passing in experiencing them. I will take myself back to my other foxhound discussions around the world.

i adore foxhounds...been around them most of my life in one way or another...
please..i think you missed the point a bit? just a wee bit? the point being...it not the dog comment but the narrow mindiness comment...we are not being narrow minded...what folk are doing are posting their own exp. and ideas gained from that of this breed...so come on hun...educate on behalf of 'your' breed...if i can prove to the shooting folk that clumbers are capable of working then 

introduce yourself...in the intro section...and tell us about that passion eh?

sod the apologies  just tell us and show us what you got what you do with them and why you love them...and i need....close up pics...esp of the flews...i love the smell of hound flews...but yep...i am a bit odd  ...and saddles...my fave are brants with saddles...

My guys have also been used for temp testing at the pound, which shows the temp of this breed.

so has one of my dogs who has also lived with us since my son was 4mos but she would catch squirrels and rabbits if she could keep up - i dont know for sure but i would imagine if i let her she would eat them all up.  my other dog is a pat dog and also lives with us since my son tiny baby but i wouldnt trust him not to harm a cat if he trapped one at close quarters ...

sure claire..and i know where you at but...you met ami loads ...you know how cue reliable she is or even when off cue and i am there she asks the can i?...in the garden and corner a cat, a squirrel, a mouse, a rabbit no chance if she off cue....a tested dog in the sense the poster means is on cue......and that no different to you cueing bons off a rabbit...but off cue?...one appears in the garden? then we at where SP was at....

hounds are what they are..they are hounds..they hunt they kill...it the whipper in that has the say ..or the owner of the pet hound...just like you or I...no...i am yet to be convinced that the raw neoteny hounds make 'good' pets in the literal sense...but...i could be...given the right info and evidence...so hence my posts re narrow mindiness...i have seen prob more than you..and i am not patronising here...i have seen hyped up hound packs on a missed fox kill...then go kill...but...
where we really at i think...and the foxhound folk will add no doubt...is re flight or fight...and the breeding on (neoteny etc) cos the master of the hound pack i knew would have no more bred on a flight dog than fly to the moon..but.....if he had...then ...would those dogs having been bred to another flight dog have not made pups that would be good show/house dogs?

so for me this is a chance to read about and learn re those generations...(afterall.., in the current climate..and yep many packs are getting around the legislation now...as is my local pack..but how sustainable that is lord knows) because they deserve not to be lost as a 'dog' as a 'once this dog did this' tales for our grandchildren...for me anyway

Hello All:

New member, but I’m not going to bother introducing myself as I am only here for the Foxhound debate.

I accidentally stumbled upon this via a very vaguely related Google search result. The twist and turns of the discussion have given me much amusement.

On one side we have those who have maybe seen a pack of hounds, never personally owned a Foxhound as a pet, yet somehow know with absolute certainty that they are uncontrollable, savage animals, and cannot make good pets without exceptional dog handling skills from an owner. One member of this faction even thinks a fox is a type of dog!

On the other side we have “pet” Foxhound breeders and owners, who are merely saying that (away from the pack) the foxhound is little different to any other domestic dog, but generally has an agreeable temperament.

It’s not hard for an independent observer workout which group is qualified to hold an opinion, and which group is not.

What saddens me it that many dog owners here do not appear to have the most basic understanding of dogs. Any breed of dog, left to its own devices, will form a pack and hunt. That’s what they evolved to do. We may have changed their shapes and features, but any dog is still a pack-hunting animal.

It’s interesting that the Rottweiler owner is so anti Foxhound ownership, when his/her breed has a well know propensity for extreme aggression, and, if untrained, or poorly socialised, and allowed to run at large, can pose a significant physical threat to other animals or humans. Maybe I just missed all the "Foxhound savages child" press coverage?

Foxhounds have been bred to utilise their extraordinary tracking abilities, not for blood lust.

Me – I would have a Foxhound any day in preference to a very large number of more popular breeds. The term “faithful old hound” didn’t come about without good reason.

you have just negated by your post all that i was doing to promote foxhound ownership....heyho....sad...very sad...maybe i am wasting my time afterall.....maybe some other foxy folk will restore my faith,,,,

and you know what...i bet i have known more foxhounds, more working beagles, more harriers, more otter hounds et al....put together than you have had hot dinners...
