Eating wood!

I have two Tibetan Mastiff pups (7 months old) - since bringing them home aged 12 weeks they have continuously searched out wood to eat in the garden. If I take them in the woods they are constantly munching on sticks. Does anyone else have a similar problem and if so, does anyone know why I've asked all of my doggie friends and no-one can seem to come up with a conclusive answer.

Tibetan mastiffs are known for their love of chewing wood!  Although i have no idea why lol.
