Hi,

If he is a full BC he'll technically be a "tri-colour" with full black spotting coverage (over a white base but you wont see this - or he may literally have 1 light coloured hair somewhere abouts - not easy to spot on a wiggly pup) and just the tri showing above eyes (a common place for it to show anyway).

there are probably more about than we think - many of them get put down as collie / lab mixes or collie / shepherd mixes and maybe they are but  - 2 reasons because the word "lab" makes dogs instantly more appealable to most people and because not many people realise they come in black.  i looked after a black longcoated boy in rescue - no pic tho i'm afraid :(

Gordon Setters are only black/tan

if you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch

hi,

Gordons can carry dilution to liver and to red and also historically were tri-colour and can also be all black.

Border Collies certainly can be simply black & tan, they are just that & not tri colours, there are quite a few ISDS registered ones. They can also be quin coloured-black, white, tan, red & blue is one such combination & before anyone says they do not exist, they do as my Giff was one & was ISDS registered as Bl, W, T, B & R & not tri coloured or anything else
