Foxhounds

There is a woman I forget her name who breeds and shows foxhounds and does very well with them.

However, in general they do not make good pets, contrary to what the RSPCA would have you believe re the possibility of rehoming ex hunt foxhounds.

the reasons are many and various and do not necessarily revolve around killing things.  They are usually much larger than people think, because they have been fed hunt swill and lived outside their toilet habits are usually not very nice, they are about as responsive as a wolf on their own and with nothing to do and require huge amounts of exercise to keep them sane.

Of course there ARE exceptions, but this is what they are, exceptions………

thats what i was trying to think of SP …the size reference…i knew i missed something about them that always suprises folk…i think that because pics of them are usually taken next to hunt horses…and they scary huge and have attitude…(welll to me they do and are but then all horses scare me) folk have a diminished size image of the hounds…they really are big and have good muscle when super fit…i love them, always have, they have an aura, a raw personality aura, i remember asking dad once if we could have one ….as this is a family site…i wont say what his version of No was ….but it involved a possible period of residency in the local mental institution  ;D

but they are fox hound size – i guess i just dont think of them as being big because ive been round them for so long

do i know you? have you met my hounds in person. i dont think so.  so just o put a few things straight!
  for everyone else this girl. is me! im a 23 year old vet nurse who lives with THREE FOXHOUNDS AND TWO BORDER COLLIES.
these live in my home are not kennelled. choke chains and or slip leads  ARE NOT USED ON ANY of my dogs they are controlled by voice. and food based training.
both of my youngest hound,(dog 14mths and bitch 5yrs)  are not bred by any pack but by foxhound breeders. the dog is from a world famous kennel in this country. and the bitch that is mentioned in a early blog was a rescue! at ten months old she came to live me.and like ANY other breed a rescue of any kind can come with promblems!!!!

mentioned earlier by FOXISLE CRAZY I go for a walk and leave her 7 hours!!!!
this happened once and because she knows me so well! this blogger is unaware i left her to take a close friends dog to the vets after being attacked while out on that walk, the dog needed 14 stitches to face and above eye…
i welcome any blogger to come and visit my hounds. to meet a socailised foxhound that is a pet and is quiet happy in being so.
my hounds are ambassadors for the breed, we visit discover dogs twice a year, my bitch is a stooge dog for two local clubs, to met and asses dogs before they start classes.
we also visit hospitals old peoples homes and do educational talks at schools.
both my male and female are trained in competive obedience and agility. and we also train in scent work this is called hunting the clean boot. its a human scent laided down a set distance and a set time than the hound is asked to go find the person.
this is the same training bloodhounds do.

BECAUSE OF THIS my hounds are tested with live stock( sheep, cows, horses, chicken, ducks, birds, and rabbits) we are also socialised with cats to.
WOULD CRAZY DOGS BE ABLE TO DO ALL THIS?
so please to other people who do want to find out more. dont listen to chinese whispers unless that someone has real life experiences of they are saying.

ok.hun…chill a little eh?

we appreciate that they are not a dog for the faint hearted…many of us that posted have experience of them as you can see…well done you for taking on a rescue…and well done for putting in what must have an incredible amount of work to get them to the level you have but they dont make good pets for most people as i am sure you are aware

foxy may well have not have known the reason but the from her point of view it happened…ok…even if only once and with reason….

would like to see some pics esp of the brant  🙂

chill!!!!!!!!!!!
i under stand that many on here may of have dealings with packs ect.
and rescue in north east is work by myself and one or two others, we home hounds to vetted homes people who have met and understand what they are taken on, we often have to clear up other bigger rescues problems as they have homed a hound to the wrong family or just havent given out enough information on the breed.
we let people know how much exercise a hound >7 will need and recommend a low protein food. we also prefur our homes to have another k9 in the house.

hi,

i know how awful it is when a dog you know is attacked (its awful anyway but i think if you know them it is worse) and you want to help naturally 🙂  i cant quite understand why you didnt just call your dog back to you and all go rather than leaving the dog loose for any amount of time – one thing that comes to my mind is could your dog have panicked and ran across a road on the way home maybe causing a fatal accident … or even getting badly hurt itself ?

we have a hound pack near by – i think they are stunning, i used to pass them every morning being excercised on my way to work.  however i know for a fact they would have ripped apart any pet dog or dog which was not scented as one of the pack.

we are not talking a hound from a well established showing breeder here, its an irish pup and expectations would be that its from working lines and already missed much early socialisation leaving an even bigger job for its new “human”.  not everyone could take on a FH and succeed – probably more so than many other breeds, its not “foxhoundist” – I would say the same of the breed i love (border collies) a working lines border collie with drive is not a real “pet” dog it needs to do.

The irish think that their dog problems are solved by carting them all over here – I already know there are few homes and many 100’s of dogs waiting for homes in the UK and gawd knows how many being destroyed because shelters are full – i just think quality of life wise and chances of getting a good solid knowledgeable appropriate home are so slim that to put limited resources into carting him here and then all the rest of it – the dog would have few chances here why put a wee pup through the disgusting ordeal (and it is) of coming here and getting passed about like a bad penny.  i just dont agree with “no kill” for many reasons let the little one go and you know it wont suffer, chances are if it stays it is likely to IMO.
